What to Expect on Installation Day: How a One-Day Flooring Install Works

The idea of a crew in your house all day makes some people nervous. It should not. A good install day is organized and quick, and you should know what is going to happen before it does. Here is how a typical one-day job runs with our family crew.

Before install day

It starts at the free in-home estimate. We measure, look at the subfloor, talk through products and give you a written quote. Once you pick a floor and a date, we order material and check it in. On the day before, we confirm the time, usually early. We book appointments Friday and Saturday, 8am to 6pm, and Sunday, 8am to 3pm, and plan the install around your schedule.

What you need to do

  • Take fragile items, art and valuables out of the work area.
  • Empty closets and cabinets if the floor runs inside them.
  • Clear off shelves, TV stands and tabletops. We move the furniture, but not the contents.
  • Plan for pets. Keep them in a closed room or out of the house for the day.
  • Let us know about parking so we can unload close to the door.

Morning: arrival, protection and demo

Carlos Sr. and Carlos Jr., along with our crew, show up at the agreed time. We walk the job with you one more time and confirm the plan. Then we protect your home: runners on the path from the door, plastic over anything that should not get dust, and furniture moved to a staging spot.

If old flooring needs to come out, that is the first job. Carpet comes up fast. Glued vinyl takes longer. We pull baseboards, remove tack strip or adhesive, and carry debris straight out. Our floor demolition and prep team takes care of this so nothing is left behind.

Midday: subfloor prep

This is the step that decides whether a floor looks good in five years. We sweep and vacuum the subfloor, check for squeaks, fasten loose boards and fill low spots. In older Detroit homes with 1920s to 1960s framing, this can take a while, and it is worth every minute. Skipping it is how people end up with gaps and soft spots.

Afternoon: laying the floor

Now the floor goes down. We plan the layout so you do not end up with a skinny last row and so seams fall in sensible places. With LVP and laminate, planks click together and float, and the work moves fast. Engineered hardwood may be nailed or glued, which takes a bit more time. Doorways, vents and odd corners get cut one at a time.

Stairs add time. Each tread and riser is measured and cut by hand. If your job includes a stair wrap, tell us at the estimate so we plan the day correctly.

Late day: trim, transitions and cleanup

Timing depends on room size, floor type and prep needed, so treat these as typical, not guaranteed. We finish by installing transitions and base or shoe molding, vacuuming the new floor and putting furniture back where you want it.

The walkthrough

Before we leave, we walk the job with you. Look at the seams, the edges, the doorways. Ask questions about care. We explain how to clean the floor, how long to wait before heavy furniture goes back, and how to handle salt and slush from boots. If something bothers you, say so then. Every install carries a 1-year workmanship warranty.

Weather, pets and kids

Michigan winters mean cold air coming through the open door during demo. We keep door time short and heat loss low. Let floors acclimate if we recommend it, especially for wood products. Kids and pets should stay clear of the work zone for safety, then they can enjoy the finished floor right away with LVP and laminate.

Why one day matters

A one-day install means less disruption, less time living out of boxes and a quicker return to normal. It works because the same family crew measures, preps and installs, with no handoffs to subcontractors. We serve homes and businesses across Metro Detroit, including commercial flooring jobs for offices and shops.
